The Saltways’ smartphone training gave our small team the confidence to start capturing and editing video content ourselves. We’ve already created a short, authentic video to thank our volunteers, and the positive response has motivated us to keep practising and sharing more.
As we have a limited budget, we decided that The Saltways Community Studio course would help us understand how to create content, just using our phones and free software. We were not disappointed and we now have an enthusiastic core group who are far more confident and meet regularly to plan, capture content and edit. We still have a lot to learn but at least we have started! Thank you.'
Thanks to Saltways training, we’re now confidently using video across all our campaigns. Our storytelling has improved, our partners are noticing, and it’s added a fun, creative new dimension to our work. I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking to get started with video.
The smartphone training from The Saltways has been really useful and helped us as a small team gain confidence in conquering hurdles we've previously felt with trying to capture content. We've already put into practice some of the tips on how to use our smartphones and how to edit together different video clips, by making a short video to thank our volunteers in Volunteers Week. It was certainly "authentic" over super professional, but we've had great response from our volunteers who loved receiving it, and it's encouraged us to start capturing more content and honing our skills.
Here's a link to the volunteers' week video we made if helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy7N3nSPDh8

I would heartily recommend the Saltways training to anyone wishing to break into video storytelling.
I have to say, we are having a lot of fun with the recordings – it’s opened up a whole new dimension to our working week! Plus, it means we can get out and about much more as our colleagues are dead keen for us to come out with them to video.

Six years ago, while working at a youth homelessness charity, I created a simple thank-you video on my phone and it sparked an incredible response. That moment revealed the power of authentic storytelling to connect supporters with the people they’re helping. But behind the scenes, I was overwhelmed, nervous, and unsure of the process just like so many other nonprofits I later began to support.
Through years of working with hundreds of nonprofit leaders, I saw the same struggles: fear of tech, guilt around spending time on marketing, and a deep desire to tell stories ethically and authentically. The problem wasn’t lack of budget or gear. It was a lack of support tailored to mission-driven organisations. That’s why I created The Community Studio, a space built to help nonprofits of all sizes share their impact with confidence, clarity, and heart.

You can email me at [email protected] if you have any questions — I'm happy to help! And don't forget to check out the FAQs below; there's a ton of helpful info waiting for you.
Not at all. The course is designed specifically for nonprofits who've never picked up a camera before. We start with the absolute basics - how to hold your phone steady, where to find good lighting, and simple conversation techniques. Every lesson includes step-by-step guides and templates, plus you'll have 12 months of technical support through our community forum to get help whenever you need it.
This is exactly why we dedicate an entire module to ethical involvement. You'll get comprehensive training on consent processes, risk assessments, and safeguarding protocols, plus all the actual forms you need. We teach collaborative approaches where participants help shape their own stories, ensuring dignity and empowerment rather than exploitation. Many of our members say this module alone was worth the investment.
We understand nonprofit schedules are intense, which is why the course is designed for busy people. Each lesson is around 20 minutes, and you can work through them at your own pace. More importantly, we teach you to integrate filming into activities you're already doing - team meetings, client sessions, events - rather than adding separate "filming time" to your calendar.
The 12-month membership is specifically designed to prevent this. You'll have monthly group calls for accountability, a community of peers going through the same journey, and access to our team for support. Plus, with our 30-day guarantee, you can try the first two modules risk-free and see if it's the right fit for you.
We've worked with nonprofits across every sector - from youth services to environmental charities to disability advocacy. The principles of authentic storytelling apply regardless of your cause. During your included strategy session, we'll help you identify the specific stories and approaches that work best for your organisation's unique mission and community.
Yes, absolutely. While you'll receive one set of login credentials, your team members are welcome to share access to work through the modules together. This actually works really well for many organisations - you can designate someone as your "lead filmmaker" while others focus on story spotting or ethical protocols. Just keep in mind that the personal strategy session and membership benefits (like the monthly group calls) are designed for the primary contact person who enrolled.
