The Saltways’ smartphone training gave our small team the confidence to start capturing and editing video content ourselves. We’ve already created a short, authentic video to thank our volunteers, and the positive response has motivated us to keep practising and sharing more.
As we have a limited budget, we decided that The Saltways Community Studio course would help us understand how to create content, just using our phones and free software. We were not disappointed and we now have an enthusiastic core group who are far more confident and meet regularly to plan, capture content and edit. The smartphone training from The Saltways has been really useful and helped us as a small team gain confidence in conquering hurdles we've previously felt with trying to capture content. We've already put into practice some of the tips on how to use our smartphones and how to edit together different video clips, by making a short video to thank our volunteers in Volunteers Week. It was certainly "authentic" over super professional, but we've had great response from our volunteers who loved receiving it, and it's encouraged us to start capturing more content and honing our skills.

Six years ago, while working at a youth homelessness charity, I created a simple thank-you video on my phone and it sparked an incredible response. That moment revealed the power of authentic storytelling to connect supporters with the people they’re helping. But behind the scenes, I was overwhelmed, nervous, and unsure of the process just like so many other nonprofits I later began to support.
Through years of working with hundreds of nonprofit leaders, I saw the same struggles: fear of tech, guilt around spending time on marketing, and a deep desire to tell stories ethically and authentically. The problem wasn’t lack of budget or gear. It was a lack of support tailored to mission-driven organisations. That’s why I created The Community Studio, a space built to help nonprofits of all sizes share their impact with confidence, clarity, and heart.
